How to Relieve Neck Pain

Drink Water

Staying hydrated will help keep the discs in your spine the correct height and in the right alignment. When your discs are off even slightly, this causes pressure in the spine which in turn can cause back and neck pain. The discs within your spine are made up of mostly water when you are first born but, with time, the water level decreases and this is how the disc breaks down and becomes damaged. Because of this fact, it is extremely important for our bodies to stay thoroughly hydrated. Carrying a water bottle with you will encourage you to drink throughout the day. Additionally, if you struggle with water intake, drinking a glass of water with daily tasks will turn water drinking into a routine to follow every day.

Less Phone Use

When it comes to technology, we now have it at our fingertips, literally. Our cell phones have replaced the age-old home phone, and we can do everything on our cellular device from making a call to searching the internet. A way you may be straining your neck is holding your phone with your ear and your neck. This causes your cervical spine to become strained. Another common way your phone may be the culprit of your neck pain is when you are texting. When you text, you need to look down at your phone, putting your neck in an unnatural position for an extended period of time. Furthermore, when you are searching the internet on your phone, you most likely are looking at a downward angle as well. Try holding your phone up when you text and check things on the net, as this will not strain the neck. Also, use hands-free calling when able, so you aren’t throwing your spine out of whack.

Go Swimming

When you know your neck is inflamed and causing you stress, try and find a swimming pool and let the water do the work. Being in the water will provide pain relief, as well as relaxation for the muscles when you don’t have time to see our chiropractor. You want to get the water level up to your neck and gently move around. Also, finding a warmer, heated pool can really help relieve your neck pain. If you want to use swimming as a form of exercise, make sure you are finding a stroke that is gentle on the neck. Breaststroke is good for athletic ability and to keep the neck aligned and not strained.
